Armenia opening embassies in Israel, Ethiopia
The Armenian government approved draft decisions on opening embassies in Israel and Ethiopia at a meeting on Thursday.
According to the document, establishing Armenian Embassy in Tel Aviv in the shortest period possible is an important tool to ensure sustainable development of Armenian-Israeli relations.
“The need to establish a diplomatic representation of Armenia in Israel is also conditioned by the fact that in the Middle East Israel is a major geopolitical player whose policy directly affects the reshaping and stability of that region,” it said.
Presenting the issue to ministers, Foreign Minister Zohrab Mnatsakanyan did not mention specific timeframes for opening the embassy, adding it depends on mutual work.
Asked whether Israel, in turn, plans to open an embassy in Armenia, the minister said the issue remains on the agenda.
Armenia and Israel established diplomatic relations in April 1992.
The foreign minister next presented the draft decision on establishing an Armenian embassy in Ethiopia also approved by the government.
According to him, the opening of an embassy in Addis Ababa will enable Armenia not only to establish close bilateral relations with Ethiopia, but also to deepen contacts and cooperation with other African states.
“Moreover, the establishment of the Armenian diplomatic representation in Ethiopia will enable the development of cooperation with the African Union,” the minister said.
