Russian film and stage director Mark Zakharov dies aged 85
Famous film and stage director Mark Zakharov, who was chief artistic director of Lenkom Theater, died in Moscow at the age of 85, director at the theatre Mark Varshaver told Russian media on Saturday.
Born in Moscow, Zakharov graduated from the capital's leading theater school in 1955 and worked as an actor before becoming a theater director a decade later. In 1973 he became the director of the Lenkom Theater, which he led until his death. Zakharov is known as a remarkable film director. Among his best works was '12 Chairs' (1977).
Many of Zakharov's theater productions have become iconic. Zakharov is survived by his daughter, who is an actress. Funeral arrangements weren't immediately known.
