A new inclusive dance performance entitled “The Argonauts” was staged at Hakob Paronyan Musical Comedy Theatre in Yerevan on Wednesday that had brought together disabled and non-disabled performers from Ukraine, Armenia, and Georgia.

The performance which is the joint production of the UK Candoco Dance Company, Lost Dog Dance Theatre Company and the British Council is a fragmented re-telling of the story of Jason and Medea told through words, music and movement.

The Argonauts was shown in Yerevan as part of the 17th edition of High Fest International Performing Arts Festival.

“This performance looks at how we build our sense of individual and collective identity through the telling and re-telling of stories. It is a piece about the mythical and the mundane and how they are much closer than we think,” Ben Duke, Artistic Director at Lost Dog company said.

Country Director at British Council Armenia Arevik Saribekyan in turn, noted: “The Armenian audience knows Candoco very well as they have performed in Armenia several times and their first visit in 2013 marked the start of our efforts of establishing the first inclusive dance company in Armenia. After six years of cooperation, we have the first professional inclusive dance group within the Small Theatre in Yerevan that not only stages regular performances in Armenia but has also appeared on international stages. This is great initiative that not only provides an opportunity for disabled people to fulfil their potential through arts but also to break stereotypes about disability and art.”

To note, “Unlimited: Making the Right Moves” programme is curated by the British Council and is an arts and disability programme arising from a common-sense idea that there are no limits for those who dream big, regardless of background or physical ability.
