Armenian PM reveals plans to plant around 500,000 trees on 140-hectare area by year-end
Addressing environmental issues, particularly preserving and restoring forests, is one of the priorities of the Armenian government, Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan said in his opening remarks at the “Forest Summit: Global Action and Armenia” in Yerevan.
He noted that Armenia has been facing the challenge of declining viability of forest areas for a long time, adding this negative phenomenon appeared due to a number of problems which emerged in the early years of independence, in particular in the energy sector. According to Pashinyan, this was later combined with the global climate change tendency.
Pashinyan said his government has recently made an unprecedented decision: they have allocated 424 million drams to start the process of forest restoration and plan to plant around 500,000 saplings on an area of 140 hectares by the end of 2019.
