Expert: If Turkey succeeds in Syria, Azerbaijan will try its chance at Artsakh
The Turkish military operation in Syria inspired certain political, expert and media circles in Azerbaijan, who hinted that the next in line is Artsakh, an expert on Azerbaijan Anzhela Elibegova told a discussion entitled “The Changing Middle East and Armenia's Security Environment" hosted by Voskanapat analytical center on Tuesday.
The expert said if Turkey succeeds in Syria, Azerbaijan will try its chance at Artsakh (Nagorno-Karabakh).
Although Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov ruled out any major escalation of tensions on the Artsakh-Azerbaijan contact line, Elibegova says it could happen in half a year, since the situation is changing rapidly and often unpredictably.
The expert stressed today Armenia does not have a common propaganda strategy on the Karabakh issue as an important tool to make clear that it is on this basis that Armenia's foreign propaganda campaign will be anchored.
“We need to see that vision, understand where we are going regarding the Artsakh conflict, what we want and how we plan to achieve it. It is not desirable to make contradictory statements once a week,” Elibegova said.
Speaking about the domestic political processes in Azerbaijan, the expert said the country is witnessing important rearrangements, adding Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev is getting rid of old personnel in an effort to make economic reforms.
Elibegova noted the Azerbaijani authorities are not as monolithic, as it could seem, adding the opposition stands a chance in the local self-government elections slated for December.
