U.S. House’s recognition of Armenian Genocide draws Turkey's ire
The Turkish Foreign Ministry was quick to condemn a move by the U.S. House of Representatives on Tuesday to vote in favor of a resolution recognizing the 1915 Armenian Genocide.
In a statement on Tuesday, the ministry wrongly condemned the passage of the resolution H.R.296 relating to the abortion prohibition act.
The resolution entitled “Affirming the United States record on the Armenian Genocide” passed by the House is classified as H.Res.296. The Foreign Ministry's website has already corrected this mistake, but the original statement continues to be spread.
The ministry says Turkey rejects the resolution which “which has apparently been drafted and issued for domestic consumption is devoid of any historical or legal basis.”
The ministry believes that the “sole addressees” of the resolution are the “Armenian lobby and anti-Turkey group.”
The statement links the adoption of the bill to its military operation in Syria, describing it as ‘an act of vengeance” for the move.
The ministry says the debate on the events that occurred in 1915 “belongs to the realm of history, not politics.” It reminds that Turkey’s proposal on the establishment of a Joint Historical Commission made in 2005 was rejected by the Armenian side.
“The U.S. Administration and politicians as well as the American people are best placed to consider the damages this resolution seeking to disrupt Turkey-U.S. ties does and will inflict upon the U.S. interests at an extremely fragile time in terms of the international and regional security. On the other hand, it is also noted that the attitude of the U.S. Administration on 1915 events remains the same,” the statement read.
