Yerevan to host concert dedicated to the memory of Giya Kancheli
A concert dedicated to the memory of legendary composer Giya Kancheli will take place on November 3 at 19:00 Aram Khachaturian Concert hall in Yerevan, Armenia, The event is organized within the framework of the Contemporary Classics Composers' Festival that has brought together contemporary legendary composers in Armenia. As the Armenian State Symphony Orchestra reported in a press release, this is the first festival of its kind and it gives a unique opportunity to see renowned figures in one place. The concert features acclaimed musicians Gidon Kremer (violin) and Giedrė Dirvanauskaitė (cello), “Ayb” School choir, The Choir of Yerevan Specialized Vocal-Choral School of Voice. The concert programame includes works by Giya Kancheli.
The Contemporary Classics Composers' Festival is organized by the Armenian State Symphony Orchestra ASSO, in partnership with the European Foundation for Support of Culture and the Ministry of Education, Science, Culture and Sport.
To remind, internationally acclaimed, legendary Georgian composer Giya Kancheli died at the age of 84 this October. He was expected to attend the concert as a guest. The Georgian maestro who was widely recognized worldwide, composed music for Georgian theater and cinema for years and his works have accompanied some of Georgia’s most iconic cinematography. The considerable part of the composer’s creative activity had been associated with Armenia. Six of his seven symphonies were written at the Composers’ House in Dilijan; he has spent a lot of time in Armenia, thanks to which he has many good friends among Armenian composers. In 2017 Armenia hosted a festival dedicated to him.
