Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry responds to Lavrov’s Karabakh remarks in Yerevan
Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry spokesperson Leyla Abdullayeva has responded to Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov’s statement on the Nagorno-Karabakh (Artsakh) conflict made during his latest trip to Armenia.
“It is clear to everyone that it will be impossible to finalize any agreements without the consent of the people of Nagorno-Karabakh. Armenia will just not support them," Lavrov said following talks with his Armenian counterpart Zohrab Mnatsakanyan on Monday.
"The Azerbaijani community of Nagorno Karabagh region is a part of any plan proposed regarding the resolution of the Armenian-Azerbaijan Nagorno Karabagh conflict,” Haqqin.az quoted Abdullayeva as saying.
“As we always state, I would like to stress once again that return of Azerbaijanis displaced from the region to their homes in Nagorno Karabagh may open up real opportunities for then settlement of the conflict within the borders of Azerbaijan on the basis of high-level self-government status of the region, which stipulates peaceful and safe co-existence of the two – Azerbaijani and Armenian communities,” the spokesperson said.
“Firstly, substantive negotiations on the resolution of the conflict should be conducted and Armenian occupying forces must be withdrawn from Nagorno Karabagh and 7 adjacent regions of Azerbaijan,” she added.
