U.S. consulate staffers in southern Turkey detained for ‘insulting Islamic values’
Turkish police detained two staff members of the U.S. Consulate in Turkey’s southern province of Adana for allegedly insulting Islamic values in a video shared on social media.
The consulate staffers were released after prosecutors launched an investigation over charges of “provoking people to hatred or hostility and denigration,’’ Ahval reported, citing Diken news site.
The charges are based on a video on Halloween day, Oct. 31, where the pair is donning Islamic attire and offering Zamzam, water from Mecca considered holy by Muslims, as an expiation of sins, Diken news site reported.
“Drink this, rid yourself of your sins, and then live your life,’’ the news site quoted the pair as saying.
The consulate staffers then advise viewers to drink alcohol and refer to consuming pork, both of which are Islamically impermissible.
