Police officer: Cases of domestic violence dropped in Armenia in ten months
Cases of violence against women and girls have dropped in Armenia since the parliament’s adoption of a law on preventing violence in the family in 2018, Deputy Head of the 3rd Department of the Criminal Investigation Department of the Armenian Police, Artur Vardanyan revealed on Monday.
Speaking at a news conference dedicated to the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women marked on 25 November, the officer said the first ten months of 2019 saw 1,509 cases of violence against women and girls against 1,928 cases of 2018.
In January-October this year, 1,420 cases of domestic abuse were reported to Armenian law enforcement authorities, with warning issued in case of 618 and urgent measures taken against 190 individuals involved in the cases, he said.
From June 30, 2018 to present, 1,530 individuals have been accounted for various acts of violence in the family so far, 1,166 of whom have been warned, and 375 have faced urgent measures.
Artur Vardanyan says the decline in domestic violence is more related to increased awareness about the domestic violence law and the punishment envisaged for such crimes.
