Around 20% of Spitak population live in temporary shelters
“Spitak town was completely destroyed in the 1988 devastating earthquake, that covered the entire housing and industrial areas. Today, however, we have a town,” the Head of Spitak community Gagik Sahakyan told reporters on Saturday.
In Sahakyan’s words, among pressing issues the town faces is the problem of families who lost homes during the earthquake, the unemployment and absence of infrastructure. The head of community added that today around 20% of Spitak population live in temporary shelters.
“All possible options are under consideration to solve the issue of homeless families. Number of approaches are discussed, and no final decision has been made. We are working toward finding the most optimal and efficient solution. I do believe the problem will be solved in the near future,” the mayor said.
Gagik Sahakyan next pointed to the need of involving financial resources and developing criteria for determining the beneficiaries of the housing programme.
