Former Yerevan waste management company accuses municipal authorities of ‘expropriation’
Lebanon-based Sanitek International, which was formerly responsible for waste removal in Yerevan, the capital of Armenia, accused the municipal authorities of ‘unlawful and discriminatory’ actions.
In a statement on Monday, the company said it had been closely following the situation in the Yerevan Municipality and the developments around Mayor Hayk Marutyan.
Sanitek claims that the city hall’s move to establish a new company, the Yerevan Waste Disposal and Sanitation, is aimed at pushing the company out of the market.
“The unlawful, arbitrary and discriminatory actions against the company continue to this day,” the company said, stressing the Municipality prevents them from collecting the garbage containers belonging to the company.
“The company remains convinced that it faced expropriation as a foreign investor.
“Meanwhile, the deadline for responding to the company’s notice of the arbitration dispute addressed to the Armenian government in the framework of the pre-arbitration process expired in November. The government has not reacted to the notice in any way and has failed to submit any response in this regard,” the statement read.
Yerevan’s authorities took over waste-collection from Sanitek after the summer’s ‘garbage crisis’ in the capital, fining the company for a few times.
