Aram I hails Senate’s Armenian Genocide vote as ‘unique step’
His Holiness Aram I, Catholicos of the Great House of Cilicia, has lauded the U.S. Senate’s recognition of the Armenian Genocide as a ‘unique step’ in the collective fight for recognition.
In a statement on Thursday, Aram I especially praised the efforts of the Armenian National Committee of America in the passage of the measure.
He welcomed this significant achievement made as a result of collective and consistent work.
The Catholicos expressed hope that U.S. President Donald Trump will take “a decisive step” in this direction too.
The Senate unanimously passed the resolution recognizing the Ottoman Empire’s mass killing of Armenians a century ago as genocide on Thursday, December 12.
Senator Bob Menendez passed the resolution, which provides “official recognition and remembrance” of the genocide.
The House of Representatives passed the resolution by a 405-to-11 vote in October.
