Legendary Soviet Armenian wrestler Benur Pashayan dies at 60
Legendary Soviet Armenian Greco-Roman wrestler Benur Pashayan has passed away at the age of 60. The athlete died of heart failure, the Wrestling Federation of Armenia reported.
The wrestler's wake will take place on 15 December, while his funeral – on 16 December.
Benur Pashayan was born on April 15, 1959 in the village of Azavret in Akhalkalaki, Georgia.
He was a two-time European (1981, 1982) and two-time world (1982, 1983) champion. Pashayan was named the best Greco-Roman wrestler during the 1983 World Wrestling Championships.
From 1986 to 1989, Benur Pashayan headed the Armenian national Greco-Roman wrestling team. In 1999-2000, he served as the president of the Armenian National Olympic Committee.
After finishing his wrestling career, Benur Pashayan was also involved in coaching.
