Samantha Power urges Trump to recognize Armenian Genocide
Former US Ambassador to the United Nations Samantha Power has called on Donald Trump to follow the Senate’s lead to recognize the Armenian Genocide.
"The US Senate just recognized the Armenian Genocide. Donald Trump should now follow suit, on behalf of all the victims and survivors of the genocide and the millions of Armenian-Americans who have fought so hard for this day," Power tweeted.
The Senate overwhelmingly passed the resolution recognizing the Ottoman Empire’s mass killing of Armenians a century ago as genocide on Thursday, December 12.
Senator Bob Menendez, one of the co-sponsors of the bill, fought back tears as he announced passage of the legislation on the Senate floor.
"I am thankful that this resolution has passed at a time in which there are still survivors of the genocide [who] will be able to see that the Senate acknowledges what they went through," Menendez said.
The House of Representatives passed the resolution by a 405-to-11 vote in October.
