Lawyers to appeal the decision of criminal prosecution against Serzh Sargsyan
The criminal proceedings against Armenia’s former president Serzh Sargsyan will be appealed at court, the lawyer of Sargsyan Amram Makinyan told Pastinfo news agency. In the appeal, the defense of the former president cited the functional immunity of the third President
To remind, Armenia’s Special Investigative Service brought charges against Sargsyan for embezzlement of large scale amounts along with a group of other officials through misuse of official position.
The indictment said that Sargsyan used his official position in January and February 2013, when he was president, to steer a government fuel contract to a particular company that cost the state an additional 489 million drams in subsidies, about $1 million.
Signature on not leaving the country has been chosen as a preventive measure for Serzh Sargsyan.
The Republican Party of Armenia called the charges “fabricated” and “absurd” aimed at silencing the political opponents.
