Penitentiary Service chief: Armenia has 2,230 prisoners at the moment
Armenian correction facilities hold a total of 2,230 prisoners, including 1,028 people who are under arrest and 1,028 convicts, at the moment, Major-General Artur Goyunyan, Head of the Penitentiary Service of Armenia’s Justice Ministry, told a news conference in Yerevan on Friday.
According to him, the penitentiaries are designed for up to 5,346 people, which means one of the most pressing issues in correction facilities, the prison overcrowding, has been resolved.
“The penitentiary service is composed of 2,183 staff members, of which 200 work in the central body, while the other 1,983 – in penitentiaries. As of today, we have 140 vacancies,” Goyunyan said.
The Penitentiary Service chief also added the issues related to various charges in prisons has also been settled.
