Justice minister: Blockade of Armenian courts intended to draw public attention
The blockade of Armenian courts in May 2019 was aimed at calling public attention to the need for sweeping reforms in the judiciary in an effort to increase the public confidence in the system, Armenia’s Justice Minister Rustam Badasyan told a news conference on Friday.
The minister stressed if the new government had intended to create a judicial system dependent on the authorities, its method wouldn’t have been a public call to handle issues in the judiciary.
Referring to the blockade of the National Assembly building, Badasyan said it was yet another phase of the ‘velvet revolution’.
“The will of the Armenian people was once again expressed in terms of launching reforms and forming a new-quality political power in Armenia. It was followed by elections, which for the first time in the history of Armenia were described as free and fair elections held in line with all international standards. For the first time the will of the people was expressed without any deviation, as a result of which we have a legitimate National Assembly,” Badasyan noted.
