Armenian aviation authorities urge airlines to avoid airspace over Iran and Iraq
The Civil Aviation Committee of Armenia calls on airlines registered in the country to take into account the recommendation of the risk assessment group of the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) and consider the possibility of avoiding the Iranian and Iraqi airspace at all altitudes.
In a statement on Sunday, the committee said it continues following the developments in the Middle East, including the new circumstances surrounding the tragic crash of the Ukrainian International Airlines Boeing 737 plane in Tehran on January 8.
“The Civil Aviation Committee closely cooperates with the aviation authorities of the Islamic Republic of Iran, International Civil Aviation Organization, the EASA Risk Assessment Group and all its partners to ensure safe flight," the statement said.
European airlines should avoid Iranian airspace until further notice, the EU Aviation Safety Agency said on Saturday following Iran's admission that its armed forces inadvertently shot down the Ukrainian airliner.
The advice expands on an earlier EASA recommendation that national authorities bar airlines from overflying Iran below 25,000 feet.
