No problems with bananas imported into Armenia so far, food safety official says
Armenia’s Food Safety Inspectorate (FSI) has tightened control over imports of bananas into the country after the Russian Federal Service for Veterinary and Phytosanitary Surveillance (Rosselkhoznadzor) warned of the alleged presence of the humpbacked fly in a shipment of Ecuadorian bananas that arrived in the country in December.
Speaking to Panorama.am, Food Safety Inspectorate spokesperson Anush Harutyunyan said no problems have been detected in any shipment of bananas imported into Armenia during the border inspections as of Monday, January 27.
Ecuador is the leading exporter of bananas to Armenia. According to the FSI figures, from January 1 through December 16 2019, Armenian consumers purchased bananas imported from four countries – Ecuador, Thailand, Costa Rica and Georgia.
