Armenian Prosecutor’s Office forwarded parliament attack ringleader’s letter to NSS
The Armenian Prosecutor General’s Office has forwarded a letter from parliament attack ringleader Nairi Hunanyan to the National Security Service (NSS), its spokeswoman Arevik Khachatryan told Panorama.am.
Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan had sent Nairi Hunanyan’s letter addressed to him to the attorney general, the spokesperson said.
“We have forwarded it to the NSS to make it a subject of investigation as part of the reopened proceedings into a separated criminal case of the October 27 case,” she said.
The Prosecutor General’s Office declined to disclose the content of Hunanyan’s letter.
Earlier in October 2019 the Penitentiary Service of the Justice Ministry said the jailed ringleader had applied for early release from prison. Hunanyan became eligible for parole in October after 20-year of imprisonment, but his application was rejected by the appropriate authorities.
Hunanyan along with four other gunmen, including his brother Karen, organized the terrorist attack on the Armenian parliament on October 27, 1999, killing Armenia’s then Prime Minister Vazgen Sargsian, National Assembly Speaker Karen Demirchyan and six other officials. The attackers surrendered to police on October 28. The five gunmen were later sentenced to life in prison.
