Armenia’s NSS exposes bribery case involving former top police officer
The National Security Service (NSS) of Armenia has exposed a bribery case involving a former senior police officer and an investigator.
In a statement on Monday, the NSS said it obtained evidence that former head of the Garni police department failed to perform his official duties during his tenure and used them contrary to the interests of the service to uncover a scam.
The former officer, whose identity wasn’t revealed, reportedly received a large sum of money in bribes in February 2019 and tasked the investigator to cover up the evidence and circumstances concerning the fraudulent allocation of burial spaces in the old cemetery of Dzoraghbyur community organized by individuals close to him.
As a result, a serious blow has been inflicted to the interests of the state in the field of justice and conditions have been created for the those responsible for the crime to get away with it.
Both the former police officer and the investigator have been charged as part of the probe into the scam. One of the suspects has confessed to the crime, NSS said.
A measure of restraint has been imposed against both of them.
