Armenian security service thwarts another drug smuggling attempt
The National Security Service (NSS) of Armenia has foiled another attempt to smuggle large quantities of narcotic drugs via Armenia.
In an official statement on Tuesday, the NSS said its officers seized 5 kg of opium after inspecting the luggage of an Iranian citizen flying to Kyiv from Yerevan on 15 February.
The Iranian intended to smuggle the drugs hidden in sweets into the UK via Ukraine.
The investigation revealed that the female citizen of Iran had arrived in Armenia on Tehran-Yerevan flight on 12 February to settle at a Yerevan hotel. She had received the drugs from an accomplice of her who had crossed the Armenian border from Iran on the same day.
The smuggler and her accomplice have been apprehended.
A criminal case has been launched.
A preliminary probe is underway.
