RPA urges judicial authorities to provide ‘fair’ trial for Serzh Sargsyan
The Executive Body of the former ruling Republican Party of Armenia (RPA) has issued a statement ahead of the launch of third Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan’s trial, urging the judicial authorities to provide a ‘fair and lawful’ judicial process.
The statement reads:
“Today, a criminal case is underway, as part of which RPA Chairman, third President Serzh Sargsyan is involved as a defendant on a false and absurd pretext.
The launch of a case against him based only on one testimony gained under suspicious circumstances, the unlawful conduct of the Special Investigative Service of Armenia during the investigation and biased targeting of Serzh Sargsyan by the state propaganda machine indicate that the case is exclusively directed and ordered within the framework of a politically motivated process being carried out with a criminal packaging.
It is noteworthy that the launch of the trial takes place against the backdrop of the authorities' incompetent security and diplomatic activity in the context of the Artsakh negotiations.
This move by the authorities aims to divert the attention of the Armenian people from many other domestic and foreign challenges that are escalating day by day.
Reaffirming our earlier assessments in this regard, we:
- express our support to and solidarity with third President of Armenia Serzh Sargsyan,
- urge the judicial authorities of Armenia to ensure a fully fair and lawful judicial process,
- draw the unbiased attention of local and foreign media to this trial,
- if necessary, we will take all legal measures to protect Serzh Sargsyan’s rights, liberty and dignity.”
