US reports 17 coronavirus deaths among more than 338 cases
The US has reported 17 deaths from the coronavirus as of Friday: 14 in Washington state, two in Florida, one in California, according to Business Insider.
In total, the country has confirmed at least 338 cases of the coronavirus across 29 states (though in one state, Nebraska, the infections are only among repatriated citizens). The US is seeing a rising number of cases of "community spread" — patients with no known exposure to the virus or travel history to countries where outbreaks have been reported.
The coronavirus, which originated in Wuhan, China, in December, causes a respiratory disease known as COVID-19. More than 3,400 people have died and more than 100,000 others have been infected, about 80% of whom are in China. Cases have been recorded in around 90 countries.
