Armenian parliament votes down bill allowing use of phone data to fight coronavirus
The Armenian National Assembly voted to reject in the second reading on Tuesday a bill allowing authorities to use personal data from citizens’ mobile phones as part of efforts to fight the coronavirus outbreak in the country.
The draft law on amending the Armenian laws on the state of emergency regime and electronic communication was not adopted by 65 votes against.
Ahead of the vote, Bright Armenia faction head Edmon Marukyan called on opposition factions to vote against the legislative initiative “restricting human rights”, which was supported by opposition MPs.
Meanwhile, ruling My Step faction head Lilit Makunts defended the bill as a measure aimed at saving human lives. She called on lawmakers to unanimously back the draft law.
