Artsakh presidential election runoff gets underway
A total of 280 polling stations opened in Artsakh at 8am Tuesday for a runoff election to decide its next president as none of the candidates garnered at least 50% plus 1 vote in the March 31 general elections.
Voting in Shushi Penitentiary will kick off at 11am, the Artsakh Central Electoral Commission (CEC) said in a statement. One polling station has been established in Yerevan, it said.
As many as 14 candidates were running for president in Artsakh in the first round. Chairman of the United Homeland Party, former PM Arayik Harutyunyan and Foreign Minister Masis Mayilyan are facing off in the second round after collecting 49.26% and 26.4% of the votes, respectively.
The number of eligible voters in the country stands at 103,637. More than 450 local and international observers and 130 reporters are expected to cover the elections.
Providing updates on the election process at 9am live on Artsakh Public TV, CEC Chairwoman Srbuhi Arzumanyan urged voters to strictly follow the precautionary health recommendations offered at polling stations while exercising their right to vote.
