Gegharkunik governor: Situation at Gavar hospital got out of control
The situation at the Gavar Medical Center got out of control after several hundred people stormed the hospital simultaneously, Governor of Armenia’s Gegharkunik Province Gnel Sanosyan told reporters on Wednesday, commenting on the attack on the hospital.
Citing the witness testimonies and video recordings, the official said over 500 people, mostly Gavar and Noratuz residents, broke into the hospital at the same time on Tuesday, nearly one hour after the deadly Gavar highway shootings which killed two men and wounded several others.
“The wounded were taken to hospital, where the incident happened,” he said.
According to the governor, there are no victims among the medical staff of the hospital, while some of the on-duty police officers may have suffered minor injuries.
In Sanosyan’s words, he and Chief of the Armenian Police Arman Sargsyan were at the shooting scene during the hospital attack . Only the deputy governor and other top police officers were at the hospital at the moment, he added.
According to media reports, the attackers slit the throats of two men wounded in the shootings and fled the scene.
In a statement on Wednesday morning, police refuted the reports, stating no one had been killed at the Gavar hospital.
