Lawyer: No need for any preventive measure against Robert Kocharyan at all
Hovhannes Khudoyan, one of second Armenian President Robert Kocharyan’s lawyers, says they cannot release details of the July 18 appellate court ruling, as the defense team has not yet been provided with a copy of the judicial act.
The Yerevan Criminal Court of Appeals ordered on Thursday that Kocharyan be released from prison on bail pending the outcome of the ongoing trial. The court set a 2 billion-dram ($4.2 million) bail for the former president’s release, with the sum to be paid within two days.
Meanwhile, Khudoyan said it was good that the court had accepted the bail money as an alternative preventive measure.
“Although we have reservations about it. We are convinced that there was no need for any measure of restraint at all. Nevertheless, the court held that it was possible for Mr. Kocharyan to be freed, which is a step forward towards achieving a final settlement of the case in this process,” the lawyer said.
In Khudoyan’s words, a copy of the ruling will be handed to them within a period of three days, with the defense team to express its opinion on it already on Monday or Tuesday.
Asked whether they could possibly be unable to pay the large sum, the lawyer, citing the statement of Robert Kocharyan’s office released earlier on Friday, said numerous individuals have expressed readiness to help post the bail.
