Armenian marriage rate down in 2020: statistics
Number of marriages dropped in Armenia in the first five months of 2020, according to the latest figures released by the country’s State Statistical Committee. It is noted that the number of official marriages amounted for 5,619 in the first five months of 2018, increased to 6, 243 in 2019, and fell considerably this year to 4,172.
The decline is due to the situation of the novel coronavirus and the ban on mass gatherings and events set by the Commandant’s Office. In April only, 238 marriages were registered in the country and 466 - in May against 1432 and 1029 in April and May of the previous year respectively.
As the statistics suggest, along with decline of marriages, the divorce rate has also fallen. Divorces totaled to 1,218 in the reporting period of the ongoing year, down by 295 against the data of the previous year.
