Situation on Armenia-Azerbaijan border under control, says top army officer
The situation along the Armenia-Azerbaijan border is under control, Colonel-General Movses Hakobyan, Head of the Military Oversight Service of the Defense Ministry, told ArmLur.am.
Addressing the concerns of soldiers’ families, the top officer said: “We urge servicemen’s parents to keep calm as no soldier drafted under mandatory military service is involved in the ongoing operations,” he said.
On 12 July, at around 12:30pm local time, for unknown reasons, the Azerbaijani troops moving in an UAZ vehicle tried to cross the Armenian state border from Tavush Province. After warning shots from the Armenian side, the Azerbaijani soldiers left their vehicle behind and retreated to their positions.
At around 1:45pm Azerbaijani forces once again tried to capture the Armenian border position, opening artillery fire at it, but they were forced to retreat suffering losses, the Defense Ministry said, adding there were no casualties among Armenian servicemen.
The Azerbaijani military resumed the shelling of the Armenian military outposts in Tavush Province on Monday morning.
Two Armenian police officers on combat duty have been slightly injured in Azerbaijani shooting, the ministry said.
Some reports suggest 17 Azerbaijani soldiers have been killed as a result of the Azerbaijani attack. On Sunday the Azerbaijani Defense Ministry confirmed the death of three of its soldiers.
