US lawmakers condemn Azerbaijan's aggression against Armenia
Several members of the US Congress have condemned Azerbaijan’s military aggression against Armenia.
Congressman Brad Sherman took to Twitter to express deep concerns over Azerbaijan’s provocations along the Armenian border.
“Such actions put the lives of soldiers and civilians at risk. Unfortunately, these actions do not come as a surprise given Azerbaijan’s increasingly bellicose rhetoric towards Armenia and Artsakh,” he wrote.
Senator Andreas Borgeas, a member of the Senate Select Committee on Armenia and Artsakh, has also condemned Azerbaijan’s attack on Armenia.
“I have been in communication with Armenian and Artsakh officials and confirmed that Azerbaijan launched unprovoked military actions against Armenia,” Borgeas said in a statement on Tuesday.
“Based on Azerbaijan’s past behavior, and having been extensively involved in Caucasus-related issues, this appears to be an orchestrated attempt to destabilize the region at the behest of Turkey. It is terribly coincidental that Azerbaijan’s military aggression comes on the heels of the European Union considering Greece’s proposed sanctions against Turkey.
“I stand in solidarity with Armenians and Greeks who continue to suffer from Azeri and Turkish provocations, as the latter’s proxy and religious agendas are dangerously intertwined.”
Congressman TJ Cox noted: “Azerbaijan's recent attack on Tavush, Armenia is a violation of their ceasefire agreement, as well as a result of Azeris’ refusal to allow international monitoring of their borders. The US must take a firm stance in condemning this threat to peace."
Cox cited his support for an amendment to the National Defense Authorization Act, led by Congressman Brad Sherman, that would prohibit funds from being used to send defense articles or services to Azerbaijan.
