U.S. pledges over $17 million in initial disaster aid for Lebanon, embassy says
The United States has pledged over $17 million in initial disaster aid for Lebanon, following Tuesday’s Beirut port explosion, Reuters reported on Friday, citing the U.S. embassy.
It said in a statement that the aid included food assistance, medical supplies and financial assistance for the Lebanese Red Cross. “Announcements of additional aid and assistance are forthcoming,” it added.
According to the latest update, the death toll from the huge blast has reached 154. More than 5,000 people have been injured, while over 300,000 others have been left homeless in the wake of the tragedy.
