Remains of ancient Armenian fortress emerge from under Lake Van
Remains of an ancient Armenian fortress have emerged from under Lake Van in Turkey after a 2-meter decline of the water level due to drought, Ermenihaber reports.
The fortress used to be part of the city of Old Archesh, which was gradually abandoned and went underwater due to the rising water level of Lake Van in 1841. Later, when the water level dropped due to drought, the “sunken city” came to the surface once again.
The buildings of the city were significantly damaged in the 2011 earthquake in Van.
In an interview with Yeni Safak, Turkish researcher Selahattin Kosar said that part of the fortress should be restored and turned into a tourist center.
The Armenian fortress of Archesh was built in the Kingdom of Van.
