Archaeological excavations are underway in the vicinity of Lake Parvana in Javakhk (Javakheti) in an effort to find artifacts. Scientists are working at an altitude of 2,400 meters above sea level, near Shaori Mountains, where traces of an ancient village have been found, Jnews reports.

Led by historian Nino Pataridze, the excavations are being carried out in a comprehensive way, which allows the team to explore several sites at the same time. Currently, three sites are being excavated.

Archaeologists have already discovered a “unique” mausoleum in a village near the mountain, which, they claim, is not similar to the ones found in Javakhk before. There is also a road next to it, which was probably used for rituals. By exploring the site, scientists can reveal details about the lifestyle of people who lived there 3,500 years ago.

Moreover, archaeological materials have been found in the garden of a local resident during agricultural works, confirming the existence of the ancient village. Remains of medieval buildings have been preserved in the village, and the discovered materials, according to archaeologists, may have belonged to the middle class of the period.

Archaeological excavations in Javakhk began in 2003, but active research work has been underway since 2018. The study of this region has also been carried out by a modern, remote method using satellite imagery.
