Former Yerevan State University head charged
The Armenian Investigative Committee has levelled criminal charges against former Rector of the Yerevan State University (YSU) Aram Simonyan.
In a statement on Thursday, the law enforcement agency said a large-scale investigation carried out by it has revealed that Simonyan misused public funds while serving as YSU head in 2015.
He is accused of paying 34,362,581 drams from the YSU fund to the director of a security company from 2015 to 2019, but the company failed to render services at the university campus.
The ex-rector allegedly conspired with the director of the company to appropriate the sum.
Simonyan has been charged under Article 179 (Part 3.1) of Armenia’s Criminal Code (misuse or embezzlement in particularly large amount).
A signature bond has been imposed on him as a measure of restraint.
The probe is underway.
