Co-Chairing countries should activate efforts and bring the parties to the negotiating table, expert says
The U.S Embassy in Yerevan has urged its citizens to exercise caution due to heightened tensions and recent violence along portions of the Armenia-Azerbaijan border. A similar statement was released by the U.S Embassy in Baku, which instructed U.S. Embassy employees and their family members not to travel outside of the Absheron Peninsula.
Panorama.am turned to the Head of 'Henaket' analytical Centre, former advisor to Artsakh President Tigran Abrahamyan to comment on the security alert.
"The military political situation has escalated in our region, and the security alerts issued by the U.S. Embassies in Baku and Yerevan should be perceived in that context. However, the U.S. should also remember their commitment as a Minks Group Co-Chairing country to activate efforts and bring the parties to the negotiating table. For quite some time, Azerbaijan and Turkey have been threatening Armenia and Artsakh with a war, while the Co-Chairing countries, and the U.S. in particular, do not implement their work under the given mandate. The Co-Chairing countries should exert practical efforts to prevent the possible war," Abrahamyan said.
Asked whether the U.S. security alert contains a message to the sides and signals about a possible planned military actions, Abrahamyan said: “The U.S closely follows the regional developments and the statements are based on their analysis of the ongoing situation and the information they have.”
