Azerbaijan has launched an attack on Artsakh: Politicians and media around the world react to military clashes in Karabakh
The Azerbaijani fresh aggression against Artsakh is in the spotlight of politicians, public figures and media around the world. Note, in the early morning of September 27, Azerbaijan launched large-scale air and artillery strikes to the Artsakh-Azerbaijani contact line and numerous civilian settlements and infrastructure. According to initial data, several civilians have been killed in Azerbaijani attacks.
"Azerbaijan has attacked the Armenian enclave Artsakh. I hope, Armenia will get the international support and the offensive will be condemned and prevented," Dutch MP Christian Union Joël Voordewind tweeted on Sunday, reacting to the reports of military actions.
"Monitoring worrying developments between #Armenia and #Azerbaijan very closely. I strongly call for deescalation. Peaceful solution is the only possible solution," the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania Linas Linkevicius tweeted.
The reports of military actions in Karabakh are covered in n number of leading international media outlets and news agencies, BBC, The Independent, The Jerusalem Post, Al Jazeera among them.
"The reports early Sunday were unclear as to how the fighting began, but it follows months of tensions after clashes in July. In recent weeks, Turkey has expressed support for Azerbaijan and rumors emerged of Turkish military flights and the recruitment of Syrian rebel militias to fight against Armenia," The Jerusalem Post reports.
"Armenia has told civilians living in the Nagorno-Karabakh region to take shelter after Azerbaijan launched a bombing attack on the disputed region in the early hours of Sunday morning," The Independent reports.
"Our response will be proportionate and the military-political leadership of Azerbaijan bears full responsibility for the situation," the source quoted the Armenian Defence Ministry as saying.
BBC reminds that the fresh clashes started after border fighting in July that killed at least 16 people, prompting the largest popular demonstration for years in the Azerbaijani capital Baku calling for full mobilisation and the recapture of the region.
