Media Advocate: General picture of coverage of Karabakh conflict in Russian media on October 8

Media Advocate initiative monitored the publications of 5 leading Russian media outlets on Thursday, October 8, to find out how the Russian media covered the actions unleashed by Azerbaijan. The following media outlets were monitored: Lenta ru, Gazeta ru, RIA Novosti, Regnum and TASS, the initiative said in a statement on Friday.

Lenta.ru published 13 articles, 3 of which were the publications of the Azerbaijani side, 3 of the Armenian side, 7 were calls, statements of different countries and structures, as well as comments of state officials and experts. 4 out of 7 materials are neutral, none is pro-Armenian, 3 are pro-Azerbaijani.

Gazeta ru published 33 articles, 5 of which were the publications of the Azerbaijani side, 13 of the Armenian side, 15 were calls, statements of different countries and structures, as well as comments of state officials and experts. 11 out of 15 materials are neutral, 3 are pro-Armenian, 1 is pro-Azerbaijani.

RIA Novosti published 60 articles, 13 of which were the publications of the Azerbaijani side, 30 of the Armenian side, 17 were calls, statements of different countries and structures, as well as comments of state officials and experts. 15 out of 17 materials are neutral, 1 is pro-Armenian, 1 is pro-Azerbaijani.

TASS published 37 articles, 9 of which were the publications of the Azerbaijani side, 13 of the Armenian side, 15 were calls, statements of different countries and structures, as well as comments of state officials and experts. 12 out of 15 materials are neutral, 2 are pro-Armenian, 1 is pro-Azerbaijani.

Regnum published 47 articles, 9 of which were the publications of the Azerbaijani side, 20 of the Armenian side, 18 were calls, statements of different countries and structures, as well as comments of state officials and experts. 16 out of 18 materials are neutral, 2 are pro-Armenian, none is pro-Azerbaijani.

Ilya Kiva, a member of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine, believes that there is a war in Nagorno-Karabakh between Turkey and Armenia, in a broader sense, “this is a continuation of the millennial confrontation between the Christian and Muslim worlds.” The Ukrainian MP also noted that Christians and Orthodox Christians today have the main task – “to unite to help our brothers and sisters for the sake of Christ.”

New York Times investigative journalist Christian Triebert posted a satellite photo on Twitter on October 3, which shows that at least two F-16 fighter jets are stationed at Azerbaijan’s Ganja airport. Meanwhile, their use in the Karabakh conflict was previously denied by Baku.

TASS has published two extensive articles on Artsakh, one of which describes the daily life of the people who are constantly shelled in Stepanakert.

Regnum republished its analysis made on September 28: “Baku tramples principles in Karabakh that Moscow has just declared at the UN.” The author of the article recalls the principles voiced by Moscow at the UN (Basic International Principles: The right of a people to self-determination and the right to refrain from the threat or use of force in the settlement of disputes), concluding the analysis the following way: “By the way, it is important that Azerbaijan violated these principles at the UN just a few days after being reminded of them.”
