Armenia applies to ECHR over murder of Armenian POWs, mutilation of dead bodies by Azerbaijani troops
Armenia plans to apply to the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) over the case of brutally beheading an Armenian serviceman by the Azerbaijani troops on October 16, Yeghishe Kirakosyan, Armenia’s representative before the European Court of Human Rights, told reporters on Monday.
“We are now preparing an update of the materials which will be submitted to the ECHR, we are going to add this fact as well,” he said.
Kirakosyan recalled that in parallel with the start of hostilities, a request was submitted to the ECHR to apply an interim measure against Azerbaijan.
"The next step was the request submitted to the European Court over Turkey's involvement, asking it to apply an interim measure against Turkey in order to prevent its direct or indirect intervention. On October 6, this request was approved and an interim measure was applied against Turkey, on the basis of which proceedings were held,” he said.
Yeghishe Kirakosyan stressed that Turkey took measures to have the court lift the interim measure by submitting a special letter of the country’s foreign minister to the ECHR, however the court rejected Turkey’s request. This proves that the evidence and arguments presented by Armenia are absolutely convincing, he said.
"Yesterday we applied to the European Court in regard to the videos, which clearly show episodes of murder of Armenian prisoners of war, mutilation of dead bodies and beheadings, which are simply horrific and unacceptable from the point of view of the international humanitarian law. We have asked the ECHR to expand the scope of interim measures applied against Azerbaijan. We expect that this request will receive a response soon," the representative said.
