The President of Artsakh Republic Arayik Harutyunyan has addressed an open letter to Russian President Vladimir Putin asking to exert every effort to stop the war in the Nagorno Karabakh conflict zone and facilitate a political solution to the conflict. The president's appeal addressed to Vladimir Putin has been published on his Facebook page.

In his letter, Arayik Harutyunyan said Artsakh highly values Putin's efforts in brokering a ceasefire to end the Azerbaijani aggression against Artsakh. He also made reference to Putin's Thursday remarks at the Valdai Discussion Club and 'true assessment' of the occurred situation. 

"The Artsakh Republic highly values Russia’s mediation efforts, active and decisive role at all phases of the conflict settlement, especially in reaching of the 1994 trilateral ceasefire agreement. Russia also played a decisive role during another wave of the conflict escalation on April 5, 2016: an agreement by Russia’s mediation has been reached in Moscow on cessation of hostilities and restoration of ceasefire, in accordance with the 1994 ceasefire agreement," said Harutyunyan.

"Close interactions between Artsakh and Russia continue till our days. A significant part of the three millions of Armenians living in Russia are from Artsakh, most of them are the internally displaced citizens in late 1980s and early 90s who fled the Azerbaijani policy of genocide and ethnic cleansing," the President said, pointing to the fact that during all phases of the conflict settlement Russia has advocated principle of non-use of force or the threat of force and peaceful resolution of conflicts as envisaged by the international law.

"Your are the person and the head of that state who enjoys huge reputation n the world and in our region. Taking this into account, I ask you to exert every effort to stop the war in the Azerbaijani-Karabakh conflict zone and facilitate a political solution to the conflict,” Harutyunyan concluded.
