Armenian Facebook users call White House’s attention to Aliyev’s statement on arms purchase from Iran
President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev has stated that the biggest supplier of weapons to his country is not Turkey or Israel, but Russia, which also supplies weapons to Armenia.
"We also buy weapons from Iran, Ukraine and Belarus," Aliyev said in a recent interview.
Considering the UN arms embargo on Tehran, according to which Iran could not buy or sell weapons, political analyst Suren Sargsyan shared Aliyev’s interview on Facebook and tagged US President Donald Trump, the White House, as well as leading U.S. media outlets for reactions to the Azeri president’s remarks.
Many Armenian Facebook users also tagged the White House in comments on Sargsyan's post to call attention to the statement.
The UN arms embargo on Tehran was lifted on October 18, allowing Iran to buy and sell weapons only after it, while the US sanctions on Iran remains in place.
Earlier, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said that the United States would do everything possible to extend the arms embargo on Iran to prevent the country from purchasing weapons from Russia or China.
It’s not clear why Aliyev, whose sincerity has not stood out recently, suddenly decided to talk about the countries supplying weapons to Azerbaijan. In fact, most of the Azerbaijani military equipment destroyed by the Armenian side are made by Turkey and Israel, while there has been no mention of Iranian-made weapons yet.
