Investigative Committee: 17 Armenian POWs held in Azerbaijan
Armenia has two Azerbaijani prisoners of war (POWs) who have been questioned, Rafayel Vardanyan, Head of the Criminalistics Department of Armenia's Investigative Committee, told a news conference on Tuesday.
They are kept in conditions that fully comply with the international humanitarian law, receive appropriate medical care, food and all other essentials, Vardanyan said.
"During the interrogation, one of them even said that he would hardly receive better treatment in Azerbaijan,” the official said, promising to provide updates on the matter.
In Vardanyan’s words, 17 Armenian servicemen are currently held in Azerbaijan as POWs.
“The data of 17 servicemen have been clarified, while the data of two others are being clarified, we can’t say anything for sure now. We are working with the Armenian representation at the ECHR and the Defense Ministry’s Interdepartmental Commission on Prisoners of War to apply urgent measures on Armenian servicemen. Applications have been submitted by the Armenian representation at the ECHR and human rights activists separately, some have been satisfied, while the others are under consideration," he said.
The data on an Armenian civilian captured by the Azerbaijani forces are being clarified, Vardanyan said.
