ICRC and ARCS warn against using the Red Cross emblem on private cars or objects
The International Committee of the Red Cross in Armenia (ICRC) and the Armenian Red Cross Society have issued a joint statement in connection with the use of Red Cross sign by individuals, private groups and companies. The statement said that in these days of escalation of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, they come across situations when the Red Cross sign is attached on different vehicles with humanitarian aid collected by individuals, private groups and companies.
The statement reminds that according to the “Law of the Republic of Armenia About use and protection of emblems of the Red Cross and Red Crescent”, individuals and legal entities in the territory of the Republic of Armenia are not authorized to use the Red Cross as a protective or distinctive sign. It notes that attaching the Red Cross emblem on the private cars or objects violates Armenian law, as well as the Geneva Conventions Additional Protocols I and II, and the rules of use of the emblem contained in international humanitarian law.
The Red Cross emblem, as a distinctive sign or signal, is used to indicate the affiliation of a given person, vehicle, structure or other objects, said the statement.
