Armenians leave their homes in Karvachar after agreement to cede it to Azerbaijan
Artsakh Armenians living in the Karvachar region are leaving their homes after the land was ceded by Armenia to Azerbaijan in a Russian-brokered ceasefire agreement.
Under the deal, the region must be handed over to Azerbaijan by Sunday.
The Karvachar road resembles a migrant route as people are trying to bring out what they have created for more than 20 years, Azatutyun.am reports.
Karvachar has 16 villages and 3,500 residents and the houses are being emptied in all the villages, people are even demolishing the roofs.
The Karvachar residents say they have to take everything they have with them, including doors and windows, to build makeshift houses and live there.
"What should we do? We ourselves built this house from the beginning to the end to live a dignified life. I have five children and all of them are university students. They need a tuition fee of 700,000 drams each. We are working hard to make both ends meet, we raised more than 100 animals, but all of them were killed,” a resident of Nor Kharkhaput village says.
