Varuzhan Geghamyan: Turkey set to employ 'demographic engineering' in Karabakh
Expert in Turkish studies, Aide to the president of Armenia Varuzhan Geghamyan has commented on Sky News Arabia report about Turkey's plans to transfer hundreds of families from Syria's northwestern parts to territories of Nagorno-Karabakh ceded to Azerbaijan as a result of the trilateral statement signed on November 9. As Geghamyan said, those families are mostly Turkoman people, who will be resettled in Karabakh to change the demographic character of the region.
In Geghamyan's words, Turkey has used this policy in northern Syria over the past years, through employing the so-called 'demographic engineering' aimed at uprooting the locals and settling pro-Turkish groups, as evidenced by numerous reports.
"If you look at the map, you will see what the change of demographics means. Armenia and the remaining part of Artsakh will be surrounded by new Turks backed by Ankara, and those people are ready militants. This is something that may disturb equally Russia, Iran and Georgia," said Geghamyan, adding: "We must realize the imminent physical threat we are facing and need a competent and real policy instead of circus and an imitation of policy."
