Armenian NA Council applies to the Constitutional Court to strip Tsarukyan of parliamentary mandate
The Armenian National Assembly Council approved on Tuesday the motion to strip the leader of opposition Prosperous Armenia Party (PAP) Gagik Tsarukyan of his parliamentary immunity and turned to the Constitutional Court for final decision.
"This was an clear political decision. The Council members voted in favor of the motion to send it to the Constitutional Court. What he witnessed at the Council meeting contained elements of political persecution," Arman Abovyan, lawmaker from PAP commented on the decision.
To note, the motion under consideration was based on a constitutional provision that a NA deputy may not engage in any other paid occupation except scientific and educational activity and may not engage in entrepreneurial activity.
The Constitutional Court is set determine the constitutionality of the decision within 30 days .
