Opposition figure urges nationwide protests amid Armenian PM’s failure to step down
Member of the opposition Armenian Revolutionary Federation (ARF, Dashnaktsutyun) Ishkhan Saghatelyan called for peaceful nationwide protests after Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan failed to announce his resignation by Tuesday noon.
The opposition parties gave Pashinyan until 12pm December 8 to step down at a rally of the Homeland Salvation Movement on December 5. They read out the opposition ultimatum in front of the prime minister’s residence.
“As you can see Nikol Pashinyan has not tendered his resignation. Therefore, from now until 5pm, citizens of Armenia have a legitimate right to carry out peaceful acts of civil disobedience to express their complaints and demands,” Saghatelyan said in a video message.
The opposition figure urged people not to violate the law during protests and not to give in to provocations. Also, he called on the law enforcement agencies to ensure the right of Armenian citizens to free marches and demonstrations, as well as not to fulfil Nikol Pashinyan's “illegal orders” to use force against protesters.
Ishkhan Saghatelyan once again urged Pashinyan to step down without causing much turbulence. “Your resignation is of vital importance for our people and state. Nikol, go away!” he said.
