Ombudsman: Azerbaijan fails to publish the real number of Armenian captives
The Human Rights Defender of Armenia Arman Tatoyan, the Representative of Armenia before the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) Yeghishe Kirakosyan, lawyers Artak Zeynalyan and Siranush Sahakyan held a meeting on Tuesday with the US Ambassador to Armenia Lynne Tracy. As the Ombudsman's Office reported, during the meeting Arman Tatoyan presented evidence on the facts of torture and ill-treatment against ethnic Armenians in Azerbaijan.
The Ombudsman raised concern that Azerbaijani authorities artificially delay the process of exchange of bodies and captives, which has been the case during the military activities, and continues now after the completion of military actions. Azerbaijani thus aims to cause psychological and mental suffering to the Armenian public, Tatoyan said, adding thus far Azerbaijan has also failed to publish the real number of Armenian captives.
Ambassador Tracy, in turn, stated that the dignified treatment and safe return of detainees was among the highest priorities for the United States. She condemned acts of violence against detainees and stressed that those responsible must be held accountable.
