Armenia was ready to recognize the independence of Nagorno-Karabakh in 2016 - Eduard Nalbandyan
"The military actions in the 2016 Karabakh war were stopped within 3.5 days. Armenia had prepared all necessary documents for recognizing the independence of Nagorno-Karabakh, and we were ready for that," Armenia's former FM Eduard Nalbandyan stated on Friday during an online discussion on the topic of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict. In Nalbandyan's words, at that time, active negotiations were underway and if those yielded no result, Armenia would definitely recognize Artsakh.
The former minister insisted that during the recent war Armenia had all the grounds to formally recognize the independence of Nagorno-Karabakh. Unlike the war in 2016, the recent military actions lasted longer, and Azerbaijani was repeatedly violating the humanitarian ceasefires. In his words, the facts were enough for Yerevan to proceed with the process of recognition, which could ultimately resolve the situation.
The minister, however, reminded that Armenia had refrained from the move over the past years, since the international community and the OSCE Minsk group Co-Chairs warned the recognition could damage the negotiation process.
